Benjamin Franklin eloquently penned the unforgettable phrase “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Everyone’s day is made up of mini tasks which contribute to accomplishing the goal for the day. In many cases the goals set for each day play an integral role in completing a major goal set for a month, quarter or year. When an individual who is a part of the team doesn’t meet their goals, the team suffers. An excellent way to stay focused is to make sure each task is measurable. Being able to evaluate your progress in a tangible way creates focus and encourages diligence. So where do you begin? Tech savvy individuals can use their smart phones or tablets to keep track of appointments, set reminders, and monitor progress. While more traditional forms of being organized work just as well. Use your organizer to make a “to do” list and check tasks off as soon as they’re completed.
Goals are like checkpoints on a road trip – having a destination that you are heading towards makes it possible to plan the stops along the way. After driving a certain distance you have to stop to refuel, in order for you to continue along your journey at a productive pace. It is imperative that you pace yourself during the day as to make sure you don’t burn out or become exhausted or unproductive. Setting the right pace for the day and stopping to refuel will keep you refreshed and productive.
Never lose sight of the big picture! In growing your business, it’s important to have goals that you are working towards. Without goals, you are like a sailboat sailing on the whims of the wind taking you in many different directions which makes you completely counterproductive. Paul Meyer says, “If you are not making the progress that you would like to make and are capable of making, it is simply because your goals are not clearly defined.”
Now plan your work and work your plan. Do not be dismayed by the perils that come your way, it’s all a part of the process to success. Embrace the setbacks because a setback is just a setup for a comeback.
What’s your plan today?
